Students are referred to the Read Naturally program by a teacher or parent. The recommendation is based on multiple data from the classroom teacher, student resource teacher and parent. Various data compiled includes observations, repeated oral reading, Accelerated reader test results and NWEA test results. Once a student is referred, an assessment is completed by the Director of Student Resources to verify current reading level. The assessment times a student reading for one minute and records the number of words read correct minus any errors. This is then used to indicate the appropriate reading level for the student. After the reading level is determined, the student is given a sequenced series of stories to work through on an independent basis with guidance and checkpoints.
