Merry Minstrels is a unique extra-curricular musical group that has provided performance and outreach opportunities for students at St. John’s for the past 19 years. Students learn traditional English Morris Dances, which are rich in symbolism and performed with garlands, scarves, sticks, swords and the Maypole. Colorful costumes and authentic recorder music enhance the dancing.
Over the years, Merry Minstrels have conducted interactive, educational performances at other schools; entertained residents of nursing homes, hospitals, and shelters; and participated in ethnic festivals. They have performed at the Cathedral of St. Paul. Last year they rang bells for the Red Kettle Campaign at the Mall of America and performed in the “Spring Fling” at the Midtown Global Market. Hat Day, Friendship Day, St. Patrick’s Day and May Day are regular events we celebrate. Every school year brings new opportunities for performance, but one gig is an annual event: The Minnesota Renaissance Festival.
Merry Minstrels is a great way to get involved at St. John’s and engage in the community in a meaningful way. Visitors are always welcome. Check us out and join the fun some Friday morning soon! Come be part of our 20th year!
