Distance Learning

St. John the Baptist is committed to holding in-person classes throughout the 2023-2024 school year. However, we are fully aware that we may need to move to distance learning due to inclement weather or a variety of other reasons.

During the fall months, all students at St. John the Baptist have been taught how to use various websites and platforms as it is our goal to create a seamless transition from the classroom to distance learning.

Frequently Asked Questions

How will my child access distance learning materials?

** Any device with internet access should be sufficient to access distance learning materials. **
** Google Chrome is the preferred internet browser to access Google Classroom. **

  • Go to www.google.com
  • All students have been assigned a St. John’s email address (ending in @stjohnnyb.org), which will give them access to Google Classroom. Please note: To access the classroom, students need to use this email versus a parent’s email.
  • Sign in to Google using your child’s email address ending in @stjohnnyb.org.
  • Click on the “waffle” icon   in the upper right corner. Find the Classroom icon and click on it.
  • You should now see all of the courses that your child is enrolled in.
  • Click on each class to look for announcements and assignments.

After logging in to Google Classroom, will my child need to access other websites?

If your child’s teacher would like him/her to work on other websites, those will be linked in Google Classroom. Once your child clicks on those sites, they may need to login to each one. Your child should have a list of their usernames and passwords accessible to them in their folder or their planner.

What websites will they be accessing?

** This list is not exhaustive and will vary depending on your child’s grade. **

  • Zoom: Used for live class meetings
  • Benchmark: Part of our language arts curriculum for students in grades K-5
  • IXL: A supplemental website for students in grades K-8 for math, language arts, science, and social studies
  • Khan Academy: A supplemental website for students in grades 6-8 for math
  • Flipgrid: A supplemental website for students and teachers to interact

Will my child have any live lessons?

Yes! All teachers will utilize Zoom for their live lessons. Teachers have waiting rooms in place so that only St. John’s students may be admitted into the sessions. Please make sure that your child uses their real name when logging in as teachers will only admit those names that they recognize.

My child needs a device in order to do their distance learning. Does the school have devices available?

Yes! Students in grades K-2 may borrow an iPad, and students in grades 3-8 may borrow a Chromebook. Devices should only be requested if the student has no other option. Devices are meant to be used at home for school purposes only.

** Any device with internet access should be sufficient to access distance learning materials. **

Parents will need to pick the device up from the school office and sign a School Owned Device Agreement before it can leave the building. Devices will not be sent home on the bus.
