The band program at St. John’s is a pull-out program for students in grades 4-8. Students in fourth grade, and any student who is a new member of the band program, are placed in Beginning Band. Students in grades 5-8 with at least one year of playing experience are placed in Concert Band.
All band members receive one small group lesson and one large group rehearsal during the week. Beginning Band meets for rehearsal on Wednesdays from 8:30am-9:00am. Concert Band (Students in grades 5-8) meets before school on Monday mornings from 8:20am-9:00am. Wind Symphony (Students in grades 5-8 by audition) meets on Thursday mornings from 8:20am-9:00am.
Students also have the option of joining Jazz Band, which meets Tuesday mornings from 8:20am-9:00am. Students must have at least one year of playing experience and all players (except piano, guitar, and bass) must be members of the St. John’s Concert Band to participate. Auditions for this ensemble may be needed if interest exceeds need.
Students in Beginning Band, Concert Band and Jazz Band perform in the Christmas concert and the Spring band concert. Students in Wind Symphony perform in the Christmas band concert,the All-School Christmas Program, the Spring band concert and the mid-year concert in March.
Band lessons begin the week of September 8th. Wind Symphony and Concert Band rehearsals start the week of September 15th. Jazz Band begins on Tuesday, October 7th and Beginning Band rehearsal begins on Wednesday, November 5th.
Starting in 5th grade, students can elect to be an altar server for school and parish masses. Students must attend training.
All SJB students in grades 3-8 are invited to participate in St. John’s annual drama production. Students have the opportunity to participate onstage or as part of the crew (assisting with the set, lighting, etc.). Performances are held in mid-October. Drama scripts for each year’s fall production are typically available for checkout/rehearsal at “Meet My Teacher Night” the week prior to school starting (with drama tryouts the first or second week of school).
SJB’s Drama Club is an entirely volunteer parent-run organization. This club is responsible for each year’s annual production, from costuming and set design/construction to sound, lighting, choosing the production, directing, casting, rehearsals, etc. Parents of the students involved in the production are required to volunteer some time to the Drama Club and the production. Volunteer positions include assisting with ticket sales, hospitality, publicity, rehearsals, etc.

The Merry Minstrels
Merry Minstrels is a unique extra-curricular musical group that provides performance and outreach opportunities for students at St. John’s. Students learn traditional English Morris Dances, which are rich in symbolism and performed with garlands, scarves, sticks, swords, and the Maypole. Colorful costumes and authentic recorder music enhance the dancing.
Over the last 20 years, the Merry Minstrels have conducted educational performances at other schools, entertained residents of nursing homes, hospitals and shelters, and participated in ethnic festivals. They have performed at the Cathedral of St. Paul. Last year, they rang bells for the Red Kettle Campaign at the Mall of America and performed in the “Spring Fling” at the Midtown Global Market. Hat Day, Friendship Day, St. Patrick’s Day and May Day are regular events that the Minstrels celebrate. Every school year brings new opportunities for performance.
